Quotes About Growing Old

Growing old is something that is a little bit more on my mind these couple of years. While I’m still fast on my feet and is as sharp as a person half my age, the signs of age are slowly creeping in. I tire a little bit faster, things are a little more blurry and the hair is a little whiter. So, as I was intending to do a hub about quotes and was thinking of the subject, the subject of growing old stood out. This will be a good reminder that, as my mother once said, “Time and tide wait for no man.”, and that I’m not getting any younger. Having said that, I would like to add that I intend to be the youngest old person on this planet.

I don't plan to grow old gracefully; I plan to have face-lifts until my ears meet - Rita Rudner
Not sure if having face-lifts is the way that I’m not growing old gracefully, but I do certainly plan to be dragged, kicking and screaming, towards the time when I would finally accept my fate and call myself an old man....which would probably be never. So, if one day, you see a not-so-young gentleman not acting his age, come on up and say hi. It might be me!

Life's tragedy is that we get old too soon and wise too late - Benjamin Franklin
When we were teenagers, we long to be older, so that we can be looked upon as adults and get some respect. When we were adults In our twenties, we long to be in our thirties, with a stable career and no longer the new guy in the office. In our thirties, we long to be in our forties, when our wealth of experience will allow us to command a higher salary and better perks. In our forties, we long to be in our fifties, with retirement and a more relaxed pace of life finally becoming a reality. And when we reach our fifties, we long to be back as teenagers, with our whole lives and careers in front of us.

Age is getting to know all the ways the world turns, so that if you cannot turn the world the way you want, you can at least, get out of the way so you won't get run over - Miriam Makeba
At last. A quote about old age that actually gives us old fellers an advantage over the young upstarts. I was really getting depressed over older friends telling me about the future of my hair, my eyesight, my teeth and my waistline, and that’s just the physical stuff.

There is no pleasure worth forgoing just for an extra three years in the geriatric ward. ~ John Mortimer
I can’t say that I agree with this wholeheartedly as certain pleasures not forewent could have very damaging results in terms of sickness and disabilities. But, in general, I believe that life is to be lived and that in many cases, quality is much more important that quantity.

A man is not old until regrets take the place of dreams. - John Barrymore
I remember that a very wise teenager once said that it is important that there is always something to look forward to, for when there is nothing left to look forward to, then it is time to die. And so it is with dreams. Dreams give us direction, dreams give us a reason to wake up each day and dreams give us the strength to face the trials and tribulations that each day might bring. Without dreams, we are without direction, aim or purpose, we become truly old, ready to take the next step in life’s journey.

Hi wandererh,

As a person who is in the stage of waiting for retirement I dread that I still have to wait 20 years, blah. Better yet I look to winning a lottery so I can just start my retirement from working now.

It's true, I do keep an eye on the bodies reaction to growing older, all sorts of joints start to creak and those grey hairs start taking over.

I like your hub and don't really want to be at retirement age, just want to be free to do as I wish without having to report to the old 9 to 5 job.

I love this hub....great job....growing old is not fun...but a reality that you can either embrace or dread...your choice

Magdelene - We all don't want to be at retirement age but we will all reach that age one day. And we all hope to strike it rich so that we can retire early. I guess, at the end of the day, all we want is to be free to do what we want, and not be constrained by the demands of a job or working for a living.

brewskitimeguy - I don't intend to embrace or dread growing old, but I intend to ignore it to the best of my ability. :)

Your mention of a teenager explaining that when we no longer have something to look forward to reminds me of a thought I've had to explain why time seems endless when we are young, but seems to go so quickly as we get older. Through much of childhood we are eagerly anticipating pleasant events and milestones. It seems to take forever for Christmas to roll around each year, for example. But as adults, there are fewer things we anticipate so happily and time passes us by while we go through our paces.

That probably also ties in with the fact that for most people, we have so much less new experiences as we grow older as we are simply, as you put it, going through our paces.

So, I guess, a good way of not growing old, and making time pass slower, is to continue to experience as many new things as possible, and to find as many things as possible to anticipate and to look forward to. :)
