There are many ways that you can make money online. The usual ways would include setting up websites for ad revenue or product sales, buying and selling on online auction sites, flipping domain names or websites, promoting a product as an affiliate, etc. Those of you who have been online for any period of time has probably seen it all and more. But, in the nooks and crannies, there are still some rather unusual, weird and unique ways which have escaped the usual attention.
Do you know that there are people who wants your hair? And yes, I mean that stringy thing growing out of your head. Apparently, your hair is needed for use in wigs, for hair extensions and even in artwork.
And they are willing to pay real good money for it. If you have long and thick virgin tresses, you might get offers in the thousands of dollars although most sales would probably average below a thousand dollars.
On BuyAndSellHair.com, you list your ad on their site for a small fee and interested buyers will contact you. This site has been featured in many press publications including in a news report by the FOX TV station My9TV.
But a word of caution is in order. The Hair Trader is an online ad site, and an unwelcome "feature" of many such sites are the scammers. Before transacting any business, do a search on Google to find out a little more about how scams have been carried out there. I have also written a short hub about Online Auction Scams which might prove useful. I have to thank tlpoague for telling me of this possibility.
WorldWinner
WorldWinner is an online games website featuring more than 35 of the most popular games titles. They have games like Zuma, Solitaire, Free Cell, Luxor, Bookworm and Skillgammon, to name a few.
On WorldWinner, you compete with other players for cold hard cash. This is different from games of chance like roulette and craps in that a certain level of skill is required. If you are not a skilled player, you will most definitely lose, and lose consistently, while a skilled played can win consistently.
So, if you are a really good computer games player, this site is for you. Entry fees range from as low as $0.75 for a 2-player competition, to as high as $35.00 for a 10-player Luxor competition.
As you would expect, the 90/10 rule applies here, in that the top 10% of the players will win 90% of the money. But if you are pretty good player, but not good enough to be in the top 10%, there are still certain ways that you can consistently make money from this site. The trick is to play in their open skill competitions, in which you play against players of all skill levels.

Entropia Universe
Entropia Universe is a online virtual universe in which you can network and interact with other users, play games, go on missions and perform other activities all within an immersive 3D environment. It is free to download and play, and there are no monthly fees.
Entropia Universe is unique among other similar worlds in that it boasts an in-game currency, called the PED, which is pegged at a fixed value to the US dollar. This means that currency held in-game holds its value and does not fluctuate according to supply and demand. The PED can be bought at an exchange rate of 10 PED to 1 US dollar. Any PED earned or made can also be freely exchanged back into US dollar.
You can perform activities like hunting, mining or crafting, which could be profitable over the long term. However, as many players have discovered, it is not easy to profit. It takes good skills, a lot of time and a little luck and even then, profit is not guaranteed. Only Mind Ark, the company that runs Entropia Universe, knows the exact formula on how to profit.
Other than the usual activities, one way that you can profit consistently is through trading. There are many commodities like ores, ematters, weapons and other items that you can buy for a low price at the auction and from other players, and sell off at a higher price. You will need maybe a week or two to get familiarized with the price fluctuations. A starting capital of $100-$200 should be sufficient to get you started. And if you are not willing, or not able to come up with the starting capital, there are ways in game in which you can slowly earn your capital.
In the latter part of 2011, the company released Land Lot deeds. Land Lot deeds are essentially shares in MindArk, entitling you to dividends which are paid weekly. At the offer price of the deeds, the returns are a very attractive 27% - 30% per year.
I wrote a hub, "How To Make Money In Entropia Universe", that goes into some detail on how you can combine Land Lot deeds, sweating and trading, along with a initial investment, into an account yielding hundreds of dollars a month and worth thousands of dollars within a few years.
Conclusion
I'm sure there are ways to make money online that are much more unusual than what I have outlined. The online world has and is still evolving at such a rapid pace that there will be many more unusual and unique ways to be discovered and created in the coming years.

One minor consideration you can sell stuff on ebay. That is another good way to get money too. There are minor fees to put up your listing and some photos. And voila!

Hi Locker, Entropia Universe is a little like Second Life. But it does have a little more direction in that there are activities that you can undertake, like killing monsters, manufacturing and mining. But it is similar to Second Life in that you have to decide how you want to play it.
I took a look at the website but I can't find out how many members it has, but I'm sure it numbers at least in the tens of thousands.

But you may need a little time to get familiar with how things work before you can make money consistently. Anyway, I have plans to write a followup hub that goes more into detail so do check back if you are interested.
The hair trader does work, but the amount of 3600 being paid out for hair is false....
i sold mine for 800 and mine was bid on for monthes, long gorgeous, and organically taken care of, and i finally settled on a bidder... a lot of those people on there are not real buyers and will try to get you to do dumb things with your hair and not pay, so watch out and do not expect to make that much money....

I have heard of making money with games before just not this one.
Many people have made a lot of money with World of Warcraft
by selling the gold they have acquired,I for one never have sold my gold even thou I could make 500 to 1,000 gold per day.the wow gold in relation to USD was something like 1/10 to 1/20 based where you purchased your gold.
many overseas sweat shops would mine and sell this gold, and this become big business. Now wow has supposed to have shut some down, but I think they are in fact doing the something under a false pretense of being another site.I say this because I have seen there links even on there home page.
so yea gaming is big business to the people who knows how to play them well.

wvierra - Typical ways of making money from games are mining virtual gold, speculation in rare items and trading. But, for most games, you are not supposed to trade ingame items for real USD, and you risk your account if you do so.
As far as I know, only Entropia and Second Life have allowed such exchanges.
And Entropia does have it own virtual gold which you can mine for free. It's called vibrant sweat and you gather it from the animals. The sweat can be sold but its current price is too low to be of any real interest to most players.
Loved this hub, I'm going to tell my wife I'm growing my hair for cash, perhaps she'll leave me alone then. It's true there are some strange ways of making a living out there, why spend your day sat in an office.

Considering it takes over 2 years to grow that much hair, and that ideally it has to be in good condition and not chemically treated, this a bigger commitment than most people are willing to undergo.

I've made money in Second Life. However, don't join Second Life if you're ONLY objective is to make money, otherwise you'll be disappointed because it can take yrs to grow a business there just like in the real world.

This is a great and interesting hub, but The Hair Trader you would have to be careful with because of the scams out there. I would first recommend looking into these sights before commiting to them. Locks of love is another great place to check out, occationally they buy hair. Great hub though and very informative.

wandererh Great find on the hair trading, it is very unusual and weird at the same time. I mean if they are buying the hair for people who lost their hair naturally or diseases, then that's great. if they are keeping it for collection... it's kind of creepy, don't you think?

Tutoring online may not be that unusual, but many people have not yet thought of it. There are many children needing good online tuition (tutoring) and if you have a skill or experience and you are patient and willing to teach, then online tutoring could be a good money-maker for you.

I never knew about selling your hair, but that only works for young people who have never dyed their hair. Wig companies don't want dyed hair, or gray hair.
But here's another idea you can use to make money: search online for homemade dog biscuits recipes, then make them and package them up and take them to local pet stores to sell. If you have a nice package and list of ingredients, you could make some good money. I see them in our pet stores all the time.

Originally, I was selling products in retail format to make some money. But reading thru the Hubs, in particular your hubs. Slowly transitioning to information and creative ways to make money. Even though this hub is a bit older, have started to research different avenues to generate revenue. Thanks for opening my eyes and making me think outside of the box.

nikashi_designs - In my opinion, thinking out of the box may be only way to go in the online arena. In other words, you got to be different. If you want to be successful, and you do what everybody else is doing, it follows that you can't be successful because most people are not successful.

Wandererh its the only logical solution. The problem most people are conditioned that you can only do it one way, think one way. I can comfortable say that most of the population are followers. In a recent example, I applied as a graphic designer position. I really didn't have the qualifications to do the job but new that I could do it. Instead of submitting the usual resume, listing all your experience and blah blah. I created a resume without words. Only colorful graphs listing my strengths, unusual yes. Did it work, yes, was offered an interview, did I get the job, no. But the point was taking some risk can benefit you. This applies to everything in life. Do things that are a bit uncomfortable, those are the things that reap the most reward. Add this to you list of "unusual things to make money" Sell body parts, kidney, liver, bone marrow. They are good at complaining, and whining, and pointing fingers, and not much else, all the while waiting for solutions to drop onto their laps. While the herd mentality is part of the Eastern culture, it is worrying that you should say the same about your fellow Americans. :(

This is a very informative hub! I love your ideas about how to make money. I think I might try the hair thing, there is a niche business in that, especially if you are in the hairdressing trade.
break up books - I'm actually kinda of surprised that there is a market for hair as I would have expected that we would be able to make artificial hair that looks and feels like the real thing at a cheaper price.
